McKendry's Overtime Goal Lifts Men's Lacrosse Over Penn College, 11-10

READING, Pa. – Senior Alex McKendry netted the game-winning goal in overtime to lead the Albright men's lacrosse team to an 11-10 victory over Penn College at Shirk Stadium on Saturday.
 
With their second-straight win, the Lions advance to 2-2 overall. Meanwhile, the Wildcats drop to 1-3 overall.
 
First-year Jack Burke led the Lions offense with six points behind four goals and two assists and grabbed seven ground balls. Seniors Cole Genneken and Jacob Cunningham added three points each while junior Jay Shifflet totaled two points and seven ground balls.
 
Penn College opened up the scoring with their first shot on goal at the 9:03-mark. Genneken netted the first two goals for Albright to give them a 2-1 lead at the 3:07-mark of the first quarter. The Wildcats notched two more goals throughout the opening frame to grasp a 3-2 lead.
 
Penn College kept their momentum and opened up the second stanza with a goal at the 11:59-mark to take a two-goal lead. Burke got the Lions within one after a successful extra-man opportunity off a feed from McKendry at the 6:04-mark. Burke quickly followed with another goal just over a minute later with an assist from Shifflet to tie the game at four. The Wildcats responded with back-to-back goals to take a 6-4 lead with just over a minute left in the first half. Senior Shane Early had the final goal of the half with 38 seconds left to cut the Lions deficit to 6-5 entering the break.
 
Burke found the back of the net just ten seconds into the second half on an extra-man opportunity behind a feed from Cunningham to tie the game at six. Shifflet then put the Lions ahead with a goal at the 12:35-mark off an assist from Burke. The Wildcats quickly tied the game back up at seven less than a minute later. Sophomore Tyler Richards put Albright back in front with a goal at the 9:51-mark behind a feed from Genneken. The Lions held onto the lead for several minutes until the Wildcats found the back of the net twice more in the final two minutes of the third to claim a 9-8 lead.
 
The Wildcats kept their foot on the gas and added another goal to their run just seven seconds into the fourth quarter. The Lions got within one with an unassisted goal from Burke at the 5:34-mark. Cunningham followed with the equalizer less than a minute later to tie the game at ten. Junior goalkeeper Liam Ferry had a big save in the final minutes of regulation to keep the Lions alive and send the game into extra frames.
 
Penn College won the faceoff to open the overtime session, but Albright locked it down defensively to force a turnover and get another possession on offense. The Lions earned an extra-man opportunity to which McKendry capitalized on as he found the back of the net off a feed from Cunningham to earn the 11-10 overtime victory.
 
Albright held a sizable 52-39 shot advantage and a 25-22 shot on goal advantage over Penn College. The Lions also won the battle for ground balls 38-28 and converted 3-of-7 extra-man opportunities. Faceoffs were split 12-12 between the two teams. Ferry earns the win for Albright with 12 saves in 64:00 minutes of action. James Cella receives the loss for Penn College despite completing 14 saves in the full amount of action.
 
The Lions will return to Shirk Stadium on Saturday, March 5th to host Delaware Valley in MAC crossover action at 1 p.m.
