ST. DAVIDS, Pa. – The Albright women's basketball team picked up a crucial win on the road as they took down Eastern 72-63 in MAC Commonwealth action Wednesday evening. Along with the win, senior
Gabby Boggs reached the 1,000-career point milestone.
With the win/loss, the Lions advance to 7-6 in conference and 12-7 overall. Meanwhile the Eagles drop to 3-10 in conference and 6-16 overall.
Boggs added another double-double to bring her season tally to 16. She led the Lions with 16 points on 7-for-12 shooting, 12 rebounds, four assists, and four blocks. Senior
Brady Wassel tallied her second consecutive double-double with 13 points behind 5-for-12 shooting and 10 rebounds. Senior
Amina Rauf followed with 13 points on 5-for-13 shooting from the floor and 3-for-6 from beyond the arc. Senior
Abby Gaffney notched 12 points on 4-for-8 shooting from the field and a game-high six assists. First-year
Mackenzie Dover added a big nine points and three assists off the bench.
Albright took the first lead of the game with a three from Rauf and never looked back. Eastern kept within reach as the two teams traded baskets, but senior
Emma Blewett sparked a 9-3 run for the Lions that put them ahead 13-6 at the 3:00-mark. Albright closed out the quarter with a 5-4 advantage capped off with a last second three from Dover to put the Lions ahead 18-10. The Eagles opened up the second stanza with a 7-4 advantage, cutting the Lions lead to just five points. Albright responded with a 10-1 run fueled by Wassel to extend their lead to 32-18 at the 1:39-mark. Eastern closed out the quarter with four unanswered points to bring the score to 32-22 entering the break.
The two teams battled back-and-forth, but the Lions continued to build on their lead with a strong third quarter. The Lions biggest advantage was a 15-6 run capped off with a Boggs layup off a feed from Gaffney that led her into the 1,000-point club and gave Albright a solid 23-point lead. The Eagles closed out the third with a 4-2 advantage, bringing the score to 57-36 entering the final stanza. Eastern didn't go down easily, however, as they outscored the Lions 27-15 in the fourth quarter. Their biggest run was sparked at the 5:32-mark with a three pointer that led to a 14-2 run to cut their deficit to ten with just under a minute to play. The Lions held onto their lead however, as they solidified the 72-63 victory in the closing minute of action.
Albright shot 28-for-68 (41.2%) from the floor, 4-for-12 (33.3%) from three-point range, and 12-for-18 (66.7%) from the charity stripe. The Lions tallied 42 points in the paint and converted 14 points off turnovers. Meanwhile, Eastern shot 24-for-68 (35.3%) from the field, 4-for-16 (25%) from beyond the arc, and 11-for-16 (68.8%) from the free-throw line. The Eagles saw 31 points off their bench and held a slight 44-42 rebound advantage over the Lions.
The Lions will return to action on Saturday as they host Lebanon Valley at 1 p.m. in the Bollman Center and celebrate senior day.
