MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Albright softball team dropped two contests to the St. Joseph's (Connecticut) and Muhlenberg to conclude their Spring Break trip in Myrtle Beach, S.C. on Thursday.
With the losses, the Lions fall to 0-8 overall. Meanwhile, St. Joseph advances to 6-2 while Muhlenberg improves to 4-5.
St. Joseph 8, Albright 7 (7 inn.)
St. Joseph (Connecticut) claimed an 8-7 win over Albright in game one of the Lions final day of Spring Break. The Blue Jays got on the board early in the top of the first as they earned two runs on two hits and one error. St. Joseph added to their lead in the top of the second with one run on one hit to claim a 3-0 lead. The Lions got on the board in the bottom of the second as
Jenna Shallop walked to lead off.
Veronica Heckman singled to center field and advanced to second on the throw while Shallop moved to third.
Allison Melahn added a walk to load the bases.
Kathryn Baptiste then reached on a fielder's choice and earned the RBI as Shallop rounded home.
Jadelyn Van Winkle then smashed a triple down the left field line and tallied three RBI as Baptiste, Melahn, and Heckman all reached home to take a 4-3 lead for Albright.
The Blue Jays answered in the top of the third with three runs fueled by five hits to pull ahead 6-4. Albright responded with a big offensive run in the bottom of the fourth. Melahn singled off to center field and stole second to get the Lions rolling. Van Winkle singled to left field and earned the RBI as Melahn circled home.
Kaitlyn Chell followed with a single to move Van Winkle to second. Both Chell and Van Winkle then advanced on a wild pitch.
Heather Pomante then singled to right field and earned two RBI as Chell and Van Winkle scored to take a 7-6 lead. St. Joseph solidified the win with a run in the top of the sixth and another in the top of the seventh to claim an 8-7 victory.
Muhlenberg 9, Albright 5 (7 inn.)
Albright dropped a 9-5 contest to Muhlenberg to conclude their Spring Break trip in Myrtle Beach, S.C. Both teams battled defensively in the opening two innings as both remained scoreless. The Lions got on the board in the top of the third as
Kiera Reilly singled through the right side to get on base. Reilly then moved to second on a ground out and advanced to third on a muffed throw. Reilly circled home on a throwing error to give Albright a 1-0 lead. Muhlenberg responded in the bottom half of the opening frame with two runs on four hits to take a 2-1 lead. The Mules added to their lead in the bottom of the fourth with one run on two hits and one error.
Muhlenberg extended their lead in the bottom of the fifth with three big runs on two hits and one error to take a commanding 6-1 lead. The bats were ringing for Albright in the top of the sixth as they responded with three runs on four hits from Van Winkle, Chell, Pomante, and
Laura Costello to cut their deficit to 6-4. The Mules answered in the bottom half of the sixth with three runs on three hits and two errors to increase their lead to 9-4. Albright attemted to chip away at their deficit in the top of the seventh as they added one final run on two hits, but Muhlenberg ultimately claimed the 9-5 victory to close out Spring Break action.
Costello (0-3) received the loss in game one despite 4.0 innings pitched. Van Winkle (0-5) received the loss for game two with 4.0 innings pitched.
Albright will return to action as they open up MAC Commonwealth action at Lebanon Valley on Saturday at 1 p.m.
