READING, Pa. – The Albright softball team was swept by Misericordia in a non-conference double header for their home opener at the Albright College Softball Field on Saturday.
With the pair of losses, the Lions fall to 0-12 overall. Meanwhile, the Cougars improve to 10-3 overall.
GAME ONE
Albright dropped a hard-fought 14-10 contest to Misericordia in game one. The Lions opened up the scoring in the bottom of the first as
Allison Melahn doubled to lead off. Melahn advanced to third and circled home following two passed balls. The Cougars responded with one run behind two hits in the top of the second to tie the game at one. Albright pulled ahead in the bottom of the third as
Brooke Franklin walked to lead off. Franklin advanced to second on a ground out and circled home following a big triple from
Kathryn Baptiste.
Jadelyn Van Winkle singled and sent Baptiste home to earn the RBI and put the Lions up 3-1.
Misericordia answered with a big offensive inning in the top of the fourth as they tallied nine runs behind ten hits and one error to claim a commanding 10-3 advantage. The Lions chipped away at their deficit in the bottom half of the fourth as
Veronica Heckman got on base behind a single and stole second.
Laura Costello got on base after being hit by a pitch and Franklin loaded the bases with a single. Melahn then smashed a triple to bring home all three and cut the Lions deficit to 10-6. The Cougars answered with two more runs behind tow hits in the top of the fifth. Misericordia then extended their lead to 14-6 in the top of the sixth with two runs on four hits. The Lions attempted to chip away in the bottom of the sixth as Franklin, Melahn, and Van Winkle loadedthe bases.
Kaitlyn Chell then tallied the first homer and grand slam of the season and cut the Lions deficit to 14-10. Albright was unable to earn another run, however, as Misericordia walked away with the 14-10 win in game one.
GAME TWO
Albright was dealt a 16-3 loss by Misericordia in game two of the doubleheader. The Cougars jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead following three runs on five hits and one error in the top of the first. Misericordia added to their run in the top of the second with one run behind two hits. Albright got on the board in the bottom half of the second as Chell doubled to lead off and advanced to third on the throw. Chell then circled home as Heckman sacrificed on a ground out to earn the RBI and cut the Lions deficit to 4-1. The Cougars extended their lead at the conclusion of the top of the third with two runs on two hits.
Misericordia continued to add to their lead in the top of the fourth with three runs on two hits to claim a dominant 9-1 advantage. Albright tallied a run in the bottom half of the fourth as Heckman singled and advanced to second on a pop up. Reilly singled and earned an RBI as Heckman scored. The Cougars answered with a big offensive inning in the top of the fifth with seven runs on six big hits. The Lions added one final run in the bottom half of the fifth, but the game was cut short as the Cougars claimed the 16-3 victory in game two.
Laura Costello (0-6) receives the loss in both games for Albright. Meanwhile, Misericordia's DeFebo earns the win in game one and Wenner earned the game two victory on the mound.
The Lions will return to action tomorrow in a doubleheader MAC Commonwealth matchup against Widener at the Albright College Softball Fields at 1 p.m.
