ST. DAVIDS, Pa. – The Albright softball team split a MAC Commonwealth series at Eastern on a rainy Thursday afternoon.
With the split, the Lions move to 2-6 in conference play and 3-19 overall. Meanwhile, the Eagles move to 4-6 in conference and 14-9 overall.
GAME ONE
Albright took an early lead in game one and never looked back as they claimed a 3-1 lead to open the series.
Allison Melahn got the Lions rolling in the top of the first as she led off with a single.
Kathryn Baptiste followed with a single and advanced on an error as Melahn moved to third.
Veronica Heckman finally drove Melahn home on a ground out to receive the RBI and put Albright on the board.
Albright continued their momentum in the top of the second as
Kiera Reilly walked to get on base. Melahn singled to left field to move Reilly to second. Baptiste then sent a double into left center field as Reilly and Melahn scored, extending the Lions lead to three. It was a defensive battle throughout innings three, four, and five as neither team was able to score. Eastern finally broke through in the bottom of the sixth with a home run that cut their deficit to 3-1. The Lions held off the Eagles throughout the seventh inning to solidify the victory in game one.
Senior
Laura Costello (2-7) earned the win on the pitching mound for the Lions in game one after allowing just four hits in the full seven innings pitched. Melahn led Albright's offense with three hits on four at bats.
GAME TWO
Despite a lengthy rain delay, Eastern bounced back with a 7-1 victory over Albright in game two to conclude the series. The Lions opened up the scoring again in the top of the first as Melahn singled to lead off. Baptiste then sent Melahn home with a double to put Albright in front 1-0. The Eagles tied the game at one at the conclusion of the opening frame behind one hit.
The two teams struggled to score throughout the next two innings. Eastern finally broke through in the bottom of the fourth with a big offensive inning. The Eagles notched eight runs behind six hits and one error to grasp a commanding 9-1 advantage and solidify their win in just five innings.
Melahn (1-3) receives the loss for the Lions in game two behind 4.0 innings pitched and 25 batters faced.
Albright will return to action on Wednesday, April 20
th at 3 p.m. as they travel to Messiah for a MAC Commonwealth doubleheader.
