Game One Sent to Extra Frames, York Completes Commonwealth Sweep Over Softball

READING, Pa. – After sending game one of the MAC Commonwealth doubleheader into extra innings, the Albright softball team dropped a pair of contests to York at the Albright Softball Fields on Saturday.

With the losses, the Lions drop to 1-15 overall and 1-5 in conference. Meanwhile, the reigning MAC Commonwealth champions Spartans improve to 11-4 overall and 3-1 in conference.

GAME ONE
Albright rallied in game one and sent the contest into extra innings but were outlasted 12-10 by York. The Lions got on the board early with one run in the first and one in the second behind four combined hits to take a 2-0 lead. Albright was able to keep York scoreless through the first four innings, but the Spartans had a strong offensive performance in the top of the fifth with eight runs behind eight hits to claim an 8-2 advantage. The Lions responded in the bottom of the fifth as Veronica Heckman singled to lead off. Kaitlyn Chell followed suit and singled, moving Heckman to second. The two then advanced one base on a ground out. Jadelyn Van Winkle was then hit by a pitch to load the bases. Kiera Reilly reached base on an error as Heckman and Chell tallied unearned runs to cut their deficit to 8-4.

The Lions got back within reach in the bottom of the sixth as they tied the game at eight behind four runs fueled by hits from Allison Melahn, Heather Pomante, Chell, and Van Winkle in the bottom of the sixth. Neither team was able to score throughout the seventh as the game was sent into extra frames. The teams battled defensively in the eighth, but York was able to collect four runs behind five hits in the top of the ninth to pull ahead 12-8. Albright battled until the end, however, as the Lions notched two final runs behind hits from Chell and Pomante. However, Albright was unable to outlast York who claimed the 12-10 win in game one.

Laura Costello (1-7) receives the loss for the Lions in game one. Melahn led Albright's offense with three hits, three runs, and one RBI. Chell followed with three runs, three RBI, and two hits.

GAME TWO
York controlled the pace throughout the entirety of game two as they shut out Albright 15-0. The Lions held the Spartans off in the first two innings, but York opened up their scoring in the top of the third with one run behind one hit and one error. The Spartans continued to build in the top of the fourth with five runs on four hits and two errors to pull ahead by six. York's most commanding inning came in the top of the seventh as they closed out the game with eight more runs on seven hits and one error to complete the series sweep with a dominant 15-0 win in game two.

Van Winkle (0-7) receives the loss on the pitching mound for the Lions behind 5.0 innings pitched and 28 batters faced.

Albright will return to action on Tuesday as they host Lycoming at 3 p.m. in non-conference action at the Albright College Softball Field.
