READING, Pa. – The Albright softball team dropped a pair of MAC Commonwealth contests to Alvernia at the Albright College Softball Field on Wednesday afternoon.
With the losses, the Lions drop to 2-12 in conference and 3-26 overall. Meanwhile, the Golden Wolves improve to 6-8 in conference and 14-16 overall.
GAME ONE
Albright was shut down by Alvernia 11-0 in the opening game of the series. The Golden Wolves came out of the gates swinging, taking an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first fueled by four hits and a homer. Alvernia added one run to their lead in the third on two hits. The Golden Wolves biggest offensive inning came in the top of the sixth with eight runs on eight hits and two errors to grasp a commanding 11-0 advantage and solidify their win.
Allison Melahn (1-5) receives the loss on the pitching mound for the Lions behind 2.0 innings pitched.
GAME TWO
Alvernia completed the series sweep over Albright with a 10-4 win in game two. The Golden Wolves jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the first behind five hits. Alvernia added five more runs in the third on two hits and one error to grasp a commanding 9-0 advantage. Albright answered in the bottom half of the third as
Kaitlyn Chell blasted one beyond the fence line, bringing home Melahn and
Jadelyn Van Winkle and cutting their deficit to 9-3. The Golden Wolves answered with a homer of their own in the top of the sixth to extend their lead to 10-3. The Lions added one final run in the bottom of the sixth as
Veronica Heckman doubled to lead off and circled home on a ground out. However, Albright was unable to overcome their deficit as Alvernia claimed the 10-4 conference win in game two.
Laura Costello (2-11) receives the loss for Albright on the pitching mound behind 7.0 innings pitched and 35 batters faced. Melahn went 2-for-3 in game two while Chell notched a homerun and three RBI to lead the Lions offense.
Albright will take the Albright College Softball Field one final time for the 2022 season on Thursday as they host Delaware Valley for a non-conference doubleheader.
