Women's Lacrosse Suffers Non-Conference Setback at Mary Washington

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The Albright women's lacrosse team suffered a 16-5 non-conference setback at Mary Washington on Saturday.
 
With the loss, the Lions drop to 2-10 overall while the Eagles improve to 7-6.
 
Junior Chloe Fornoff led the Lions offense with two goals behind five shots on net on the afternoon. Senior Lexi Pitkevits grabbed a team-high five draw controls for Albright.
 
The Eagles netted the opening goal of the game just two minutes into action off a free position shot. Mary Washington then notched back-to-back scores less than a minute apart to grasp a 3-0 lead at the 6:13-mark of the first. The Eagles closed out the opening frame with two more unanswered goals to claim a five-goal advantage over the Lions. The Eagles kept their foot on the gas throughout the second stanza, netting six more unanswered goals and holding the Lions scoreless throughout the first half to hold onto a commanding 11-0 lead entering the break.
 
Mary Washington continued to build on their lead in the third, posting back-to-back goals to open the second half and extending their lead to 13. Fornoff finally got Albright on the board with a free position goal at the 6:15-mark of the third. Sophomore Kyra Lycett found the back of the net less than two minutes later to fuel the Lions and cut their deficit to 13-2 at the end of the third.
 
The Eagles opened the final stanza with a goal at the 13:12-mark to put them in front by 12. Albright notched two quick scores on the eight meter from Fornoff and senior Lauren China to get within ten at the 9:54-mark. Mary Washington shut down any fire the Lions had by scoring twice more to grasp a dominant 16-4 lead with less than five minutes left to play. First-year Sarah Chernis found the back of the net once more for Albright, but Mary Washington ultimately claimed the 16-5 non-conference victory.
 
Mary Washington held a 29-21 shot advantage and a slight 18-17 ground ball advantage over Albright. The Eagles also grabbed 14 draw controls compared to the Lions nine. First-year goalkeeper Caelainn Morrison receives the loss for Albright with eight saves in 60 minutes of action. Reilly Miller earns the win for Mary Washington with five saves in 35:06 minutes of play.
 
The Lions will return to action on Wednesday at 6 p.m. as they travel to Widener for MAC Commonwealth action.
