Men’s Basketball Wins a Thriller over Widener in Overtime

The Albright men’s basketball team played the game of the season so far and took down Widener 91-89 on the road in an instant classic in overtime.

CHESTER, Pa. - The Albright College men's basketball team (6-10, 3-5 MAC Commonwealth) went on the road on Wednesday evening and won an instant classic over Widener University  (11-5, 5-3 MAC Commonwealth) in overtime. The Lions won the game by a final score of 91-89 for their first win in overtime this season.

Tonight's win ends a six game skid for the Lions and ends a five game winning streak the Pride held prior to tonight's game. In addition, the win keeps Albright in the MAC Commonwealth playoff race and is coach Ferry's 297th career win as Albright's head coach.

A Jeremiah Stanton and Robert Mangum layup put the Lions in front early. The Lions maintained their lead in the early going courtesy of two three's from Mangum giving the Senior eight quick points.

Albright was firing on all cylinders especially from beyond the arc throughout the first half. As a team Albright shot 62% from the floor and 58% from three in the first half. Both of which are season highs as a team for Albright in a half. The two sides played to a relatively even first half seeing neither side able to gain a sizable lead.

After 20 minutes Albright held a slim 38-37 advantage. Jordan Guerrero had it going in the first half scoring 13 points on 5-6 shooting including three three-pointers.

Coming out of the locker room Albright took four threes and made three of them for a quick nine points. The hot shooting continued for Albright, draining six more threes in the second half. In all, Albright was 14-24 (58.3%) from three in the game.

Late in the contest Albright found themselves down three but did not panic. With 2:42 to go Albirght came out of a timeout, nailed two jumpers and tied the game up at 81-81. With five seconds to go Chris Kouemi got a steal passed to Guerrero but his step back jump shot bounced out and the game went to overtime.

Albright never trailed in overtime prevailing when the game was on the line. Mangum and Guerrero both scored five points a piece in overtime. Mangum scored the first five points and Guerrero scored the last five propelling Albright to an instant classic victory, 91-89.

It was the best offensive game for Albright this season shooting 60.8% from the field and 14-24 from three-point range. The 91 points are the second time Albrght has clipped the 90 point threshold this season.

Guerrero scored 25 points, one off his career high, grabbed four rebounds and went 4-7 from three.

It was a career night for Mangum as the senior forward set a new career high in points with 22. For good measure Mangum drained three three's and collected four rebounds.

Chris Kouemi was a perfect 6-6 from the floor to give him 14 points and added six rebounds.

Stanton and Eric Chamberlain rounded out the Lions in double figures scoring 12 and 11 points, respectively.
