Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

John Villano’s Game Winner Sends Men’s Soccer Past DeSales 1-0

The Albright men’s soccer team won a thrilling game on Wednesday night courtesy of a John Villano game winning goal in the 85th minute of play. Albright beat DeSales 1-0 at Shirk Stadium.

READING, Pa. - The Albright men's soccer team (8-2-1) played host to DeSales University (5-2-1) on Wednesday night in the Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Commonwealth Freedom crossover battle. John Villano tallied the game winning goal in the 85th minute of play sending the Lions past the Bulldogs 1-0.

Tonight's win is the second straight over DeSales and the first win over the Bulldogs at home in the last 12 years.

Albright and DeSales played to a 0-0 draw after 45 minutes of play.

The Lions best chance of the first half came in the 24th minute of play. Vincent Simmons had a good look in the six-yard box with a powerful header that was just touched over the bar by the DeSales goalkeeper.

After back and forth play for much of the second half the game looked destined to finish in a 0-0 draw.

However, forward John Villano had other ideas. Villano collected a pass from Martin Ramsay and Villano did the rest by burying the ball into the back of the net, sending the Albright faithful into a frenzy.

Villano's first goal of the season could not have come at a better time for Albright giving the Lions the 1-0 advantage with under five minutes to play.

Villano and the rest of the men's soccer team closed out the remaining minutes of the game earning their eight win of the season.

Chris Denholm got the start in net and tallied his fourth clean sheet of the season. Denholm saved the only shot he faced tonight in a testament to the back line in front of Denholm this evening.
