READING, Pa. - The Albright College women's basketball team (18-7, 12-4 MAC Commonwealth) wrapped up the regular season today with a win over Widener (9-15, 6-9 MAC Commonwealth) by a final score of 72-61. This is the first season sweep for the Lions over Widener since the 2016-17 season.
With today's win the Lions have officially locked up the number 2 seed in the MAC Commonwealth tournament. Albright will host the first round of the MAC Commonwealth playoff against an opponent and time to be determined. The MAC regular season wraps up this Saturday.
Offensive rebounds were the story of the first half for Albright creating second chance after second chance opportunity. In the half Albright tied Widener on offensive rebounds alone bringing down 12 to Widener's 12 total rebounds.
In the opening possession of the game for the Lions, they collected three offensive rebounds before
Orianna Edmond took a pass from
Gabby Boggs and opened the scoring for the Lions.
The Lions were fantastic defensively in the opening 20 minutes holding Widener to only 25 first half points. Last time out for Widener, the Pride scored 50 points in the first half against Hood College.
Albright was dominant in the first half taking a 37-25 lead into the break.
Amina Rauf led the way scoring 10 in the first half.
Julia Zakovitch added eight of her own to go along with four rebounds.
Widener did their best in the second half to try and make it a game but could not overcome their halftime deficit. Albright held a sizable lead for the majority of the second half.
In the third quarter Albright found baskets from four different Lions including seven from Dover in the quarter. Dover led all scorers in the game with 21 points, her fifth time surpassing 21 points this season.
After Widener cut the deficit to eight, Albright turned up the pressure and were not going to be denied a home playoff game. Behind strong free shooting down the stretch the Lions picked up their fifth win a row taking this one, 72-61.
In all this is Albright's fifth win in a row and their 12th win this season by at least 10 points.
In addition to Dover's game high 21, Rauf was next with 14 points and Boggs rounded out the Lions in double figures with 12. Boggs also added nine rebounds.
Orianna Edmond scored seven points and brought down 12 rebounds. Zakovitch went for eight points and 10 rebounds off the bench in another strong game for the first year forward. The 10 rebounds marks a new career high.
