Football Opens Season on Friday Night (Sept. 1) on the road against #8 Hardin-Simmons

The 2023 Albright football team opened their season on Friday Night (Sept. 1) against Nationally ranked #8 Hardin-Simmons.

ABILENE, TEXAS – The Albright football team (0-1) opened their season on the road on Friday night (Sept. 1) in non-conference action against nationally ranked #8 Hardin-Simmons. Friday nights meeting was the first time the two schools have faced each other in their respective program's history. Hardin-Simmons protected home field and won 47-3 over Albright.

The Hardin-Simmons Cowboys received the opening kick-off and were able to convert their opening possession into seven points jumping out to an early first quarter lead. The Cowboys would lead 21-0 at the end of one.

Albright looked to get things going on the ground throughout the first two quarters of play. As a team the Lions rushed for 94 yards good for 3.6 yards per carry in the first half. Ty'Sean Helm, Isaiah Shockley, Dahlir Adams and Noble Thompson all received carries for the Lions in the first half. Albright picked up seven first downs in the first 30 minutes but too many costly penalties set the Lions offense back into unfavorable down and distances. Hardin-Simmons took a 28-0 lead in halftime

The opening drive of the second half resulted in three points for the Lions off Dean Severin's first career field goal. The field goal was set up due in large part by a beautiful play action fake from quarterback, Helm, who found a streaking Matthew Creeger across the middle for a 34-yard gain.

Albright looked to convert on a long drive that started in the third quarter and leaked into the fourth quarter. After getting down to the Hardin-Simmons nine-yard line, the Cowboys defense stood tall and kept Albright out of the endzone stopping the Lions fourth down attempt. Creeger had an 18-yard reception to convert a third and nine on the drive getting Albright into Cowboy territory.

Hardin-Simmons was able to close out the Lions taking the nonconference match up by a final score of 47-3.

Albright finished with 296 total yards, 165 on the ground and 104 through the air. Ty'Sean Helm carried the ball 14 times for a team leading 65 rushing yards while Matt Remash threw for 79 yards leading the way through the air. Creeger finished with two receptions for 52 yards.

K.J. Stewart tallied six solo tackles leading the way for the Albright defense. Derrick Lynn, Sebastian Robinson and CJ Partridge each recorded five total tackles.
