BRYN ATHYN, PA. – The Albright men's soccer team (1-0) opened up the 2023 season with a 2-1 victory over Bryn Athyn (0-1) on Friday evening.
Vincent Simmons opened the scoring for the Lions and
Martin Ramsay closed the scoring to send the Lions home with a season opening victory.
The game remained scoreless until the 32
nd minute of play. First year forward, Simmons, scored the first goal of his Albright career to give the Lions a 1-0 lead. Simmons found the back of the net through the run of play and was assisted by
John Villano. Simmons was active in the first half firing five total shots in the frame.
Bryn Athyn was able to tie the game up at 1-1 in the 35
th minute. Albright and Bryn Athyn would head to the locker room knotted at one goal each.
After a slow start to the second half, the Lions were able to find the go ahead goal they needed from sophomore forward, Ramsay. In the 57
th minute of play, Ramsay decided to take matters into his own hands and break the 1-1 tie on an unassisted goal giving the Lions a 2-1 lead.
For the remaining 33 minutes of play, the Albright defense kept the Bryn Athyn offense at bay giving them no hope of tying the game back up. Ramsay's goal in the 57
th minute proved to be the eventual game-winner for the Lions, winning the opener 2-1.
As a team the Lions fired 17 shots, eight of which were on goal and earned 10 total corners. Simmons led the way with seven shots, Ramsay added four and
Noah Raimonde and Villano each added two of their own. Goalkeeper
Chris Denholm did just enough in the end making one save and earning his second career win as an Albright Lion.
