GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. - The Albright men's soccer team (4-0) returned to the field on Wednesday afternoon after their weekend game against Pitt-Greensburg was postponed due to weather. The Lions beat Gwynedd Mercy (0-3) 1-0 courtesy of a Darwyn Avila goal in the 55th minute.
Today's win is the fourth in a row to start the season for the Lions. The four game win streak is the first for the Lions since the 2012 season.
Albright has not allowed a goal in the last three games while outscoring their opponents 9-0 over the three game stretch. On the season, the Lions are now outscoring their opponents 11-1 through four games.
The first half featured no scoring as the two sides played to a scoreless draw after 45 minutes. Each team had six shots, two of them on goal and two saves in the first half. Cooper Walters got the start in net and kept the Griffins off the scoreboard making two saves.
In the 55th minute of play, Darwyn Avila struck for Albright scoring his first career goal for the Lions. Avila struck the ball exceptionally well which deflected off a Griffin defender leaving Gwynedd Mercy goalkeeper no chance. Avila's goal put the Lions on top 1-0 closing in on their fourth win in a row.
Avila's 55th minute goal proved to be the eventual game winner sending the Lions back to Reading with their fourth straight win.
Cooper Walters picks up his first clean sheet of the season making four saves in today's game. Walters made two saves in each half preserving the clean sheet.
Martin Ramsay was active on the offense end firing three shots as well as fellow forward Vincent Simmons who had three shots of his own.
