READING, Pa. – The Albright College baseball team (3-12, 0-6 MAC Commonwealth) wrapped up their home and home weekend series with Messiah (14-6, 5-1 MAC Commonwealth) on Sunday afternoon. The Falcons of Messiah took both games today over the Lions at Kelchner Field.
Today's double header was originally scheduled for Saturday (Mar. 23) but was forced into postponement until today due to heavy rain fall in the area.
GAME 1: L, 12-1
John O'Connor took the ball for the Lions in game one and turned in a solid outing. The senior pitcher navigated his way through a tough Messiah lineup only allowing two earned runs. O'Connor featured some swing and miss stuff this afternoon turning in five strikeouts. The five strikeouts are the most in a game so far this season for O'Connor.
The Lions recorded five hits as team in game one.
Jack Gilmer recorded the only extra base hit of the day in game one doubling down the first base line early in the contest. The double was the first of the season for Gilmer while also adding a run scored to his overall stat line.
Deklyn Marks got the start at second base and went 1-3 at the plate with an RBI. Marks now has two RBIs on the young season while recording a base hit in three straight games.
Rounding out the hits in game one for Albright were
Roman Berretta,
Trey Smith and
Ethan Karel. All three combined hits for the trio of Lions came via the single.
Lucas Myford and
Nick Barton both earned walks in game one.
GAME 2: L, 8-2
Dominic Yeager started on the hill for the Lions in game two and proceed to throw seven masterful innings only allowing one earned run. Yeager went seven strong innings while striking out five batters along the way. The seven innings pitched marks a new season high for the Albright flame thrower. Additionally, Yeager turned in the first quality start of his season and the first quality start for an Albright pitcher this season.
Albright and Messiah were tied 2-2 heading into the top of the eighth inning. In the eighth, the Falcons of Messiah were able to scratch four runs across the plate to take a 6-2 lead late in the game. The eighth inning proved to be the difference in game two with Messiah pulling away late to secure the road win.
Like game one, the Lions tallied five hits in game two.
Brendan Stuhltrager,
Roman Berretta,
Chris Gorla Lucas Myford and O'Connor all recorded singles.
Christian Eckstein came in to pinch run and scored a run on a wild pitch in the seventh inning.
Gorla was credited with an RBI in game two scoring O'Connor in the fourth inning of play.
As a team the Lions were able to produce six walks in the game but the Messiah pitching staff did a good job of working around the Lions on the base paths.
