CARLISLE, Pa. – The Albright women's tennis team (2-0 Spring '24) made the trip to Carlisle this afternoon to face off against Dickinson College (0-1 Spring '24). The Lions picked up a big-time road win over the Red Devils 5-4.
Today marked the second match of the spring season for the Lions. Albright opened up the spring season with a convincing 9-0 sweep over Penn State Abington at home.
On Tuesday (Mar. 5) of this week,
Valeria Sanchez was named MAC Commonwealth women's tennis player of the week for her performance against Penn State Abington. Sanchez won her singles match 8-0 and followed that up with an 8-2 win in doubles play.
For tonight's match, the singles matches were very tightly contested. Five of the six singles matches went to a third set tiebreak. Winning singles matches for Albright was
Alex Pancu (#1 singles),
Valeria Sanchez (#4 singles) and
Alaina Smith (#5 singles).
Smith was the last singles match to be played with the overall match being tied at 4-4. Smith never wavered in the match despite dropping the first set in a first set tiebreak. With the match on the line, Smith battled hard and won the second set 6-2. The marathon match went to a decisive third set tiebreak where Smith would not be denied as she won the third set 10-5 ultimately giving the Lions the huge win over Dickinson.
The Lions won two of the three doubles matches to move to 5-1 overall in doubles matches this spring. The #1 doubles tandem of Pancu and
Michelle Timothy doubled up their opponent wining the match 8-4. The #3 doubles duo of Sanchez and Smith made quick work of their opponents wining the match 8-2.

The Albright women's tennis team will return to action next Wednesday, March 20 on the road against Lebanon Valley. The match is set for a 4:00 p.m. start from Annville.
