READING, Pa. – The Albright women's tennis team (6-1 Spring '24, 3-0 MAC Commonwealth) historic season continues by beating Alvernia (2-1 Spring '24, 2-1 MAC Commonwealth) this afternoon for the first time since 2014. The Lions made the short trip across town and beat the Golden Wolves 9-0 keeping their perfect MAC Commonwealth record intact.
The 2024 Albright women's tennis team is in the midst of an historic season continuing their strong play again today. Albright beat Alvernia for the first time since 2014 today marking the third such instance this spring season where the Lions have broken decade long losing streaks to their opponents.
Women's tennis started their run with a 5-4 win over Messiah and then followed that with a 6-3 win over York College. The win over Messiah was the first since 2014 and the win over York was the first since at least 2010.
Every Lion that saw the court this afternoon picked up a team point for Albright. The sweep is the first of the MAC Commonwealth season for the Lions.
Five of the six singles matches were won by the Lions in straight sets.
Alex Pancu,
Valeria Sanchez,
Elicia Aponte,
Alaina Smith and
Alizabeth Zarnofsky all earned the straight sets wins.
For Smith and Zarnofsky, each Lion blanked their opponent winning 6-0, 6-0 in straight sets.
Michelle Timothy kept the clean sweep in tact winning her match in three sets. After losing the opening set, Timothy turned up the pressure and won the second set 6-4 sending the match to a third set tiebreak. Timothy prevailed in the end taking the third set 10-8 in a marathon match.
Albright dominated in the doubles matches winning by a combined score of 24-9.
Pancu and Timothy teamed up and won 8-2. Aponte and Zarnofsky won 8-4 while Sanchez and Smith won 8-3.
The 3-0 start for the Lions in MAC Commonwealth play is the best start in program history for the women's tennis team.
