Women’s Tennis Adavances to MAC Championship with 5-2 Win over Alvernia

Albright women’s tennis is headed to the MAC Commonwealth Championship for the first time in program history. Albright will host Messiah on Saturday, May 4 in the afternoon.

READING, Pa. – Women's Tennis (17-2, 7-0 MAC Commonwealth) is headed to the MAC Commnowealth Championship after today's 5-2 win over Alvernia. The MAC Commonwealth semi-final win is the first in school history and also marks the first MAC Commonwealth Championship appearance in school history.
 
Albright remains perfect in MAC Commonwealth play this season at 7-0. The Lions will host the Messiah Falcons on Saturday afternoon for the MAC Commonwealth women's tennis crown. The winner of Saturday's match will advance to the 2024 NCAA Women's Tennis Championships.
 
Albright has already beat Messiah this season in a 5-4 thriller in early April. Messiah advanced to Saturday's Championship match with a 5-4 win over York College.
 
In the MAC Commonwealth playoffs, the first team to reach five team points wins the match regardless of the scores of the other matches.
 
Albright and Alvernia started today with doubles matches. The Golden Wolves won two of the three doubles matches to carry a 2-1 lead into the singles matches.
 
In the singles matches, Albright was not going to be denied. The Lions won four straight singles matches to become the first team to five points in the match punching their ticket to the Saturday's Championship.
 
Alaina Smith was the first Lion to win her respective singles match for Albright. Smith won in convincing fashion, 6-0, 6-1 over the competition.
 
Elicia Aponte was her usual dominant self winning in #3 singles play. Aponte wrapped her match up quickly winning 6-0, 6-0. The win gave the Lions their third team point of the afternoon.
 
Alizabeth Zarnofsky was in action during #6 singles play and once again, made quick work of her opponent. Zarnofsky won in straight sets 6-1, 6-0. Zarnofsky's win put the Lions on the cusp of advancing to Saturday's Championship match.
 
Alex Pancu, one of the best players in the history of Albright women's tennis, secured the victory for the Lions in #1 singles. Pancu has been dominant throughout her entire career and today was no different. Pancu won in straight sets 6-4, 6-3 to not only win her individual match but the match as a whole for Albright.
