Women’s Tennis Takes Down Messiah 5-4

The Lions earned their first win over the Falcons since 2014 this afternoon with a thrilling 5-4 win over the Falcons. Albright opens MAC Commonwealth play with a win in the first conference match of the season.

GRANTHAM, Pa. – The Albright women's tennis team (4-1 Spring, 1-0 MAC Commonwealth) started conference play on high note taking down the Messiah Falcons (1-6 Spring, 0-1 MAC Commonwealth) 5-4 in a thrilling match. The match win for the Lions is the first over Messiah since 2014.

Albright returned to the court for the first time since March 25 and was able to shake off the rust against Messiah this afternoon. The Lions 5-4 win gave them their first win over the Falcons since the 2014 season. Today's win is the first road win for the women's tennis team at Messiah since at least 2009.

Alex Pancu made quick work of her opponent in number one singles winning in straight sets. The reigning two-time MAC Women's Tennis player of the Year has yet to lose this spring sitting at a perfect 5-0. Pancu won 6-2, 6-1 proving why she is the best player in the conference.

Valeria Sanchez took home the win in number four singles play in three sets. Sanchez won the first set 6-2 and dropped the second set 6-2. Sanchez regained her form in the third and final set to win the individual match with a 7-5 win in the third set.

Alizabeth Zarnofsky was dominate in number six singles play winning in straight sets 6-2, 6-0.

Albright won two of the three doubles matches to secure the overall team win. The Lions won number one and two doubles.

Michelle Timothy and Pancu teamed up in number one doubles winning handily, 8-2.

Elicia Aponte and Zarnofsky saw their match go to a tiebreak in number two doubles. The dynamic duo found themselves on top in the end winning 8-7 (7-5) over Messiah's number two doubles team.

Up Next:
The Lions will return home looking to make it two wins in a row in conference play against York College. The match is set for a 3:30 p.m. start.
