WESTFIELD, Mass. – Women's basketball (1-3) earned their first win of the season over Mitchell (1-4) on Friday evening in round one of the Westfield State Tournament. Albright was in control of the game from start to finish to win by a final score of 63-48.
The win marks the first of the season for the Lions and the first for head coach
Alyssa Parsons in her first season with the Lions. Albright will play host Westfield State in tomorrow's championship game.
Albright jumped on Mitchell in the first period, taking a 22-9 lead into the second period.
Kenedy Cooper and
Chrisdin Jones each had six points for the Lions in the opening 10 minutes.
Mitchell was able to climb back into the game in the second period by 10 to find themselves only down by three going into halftime.
Throughout the game and especially the second half the Lions defense came to play. Over the games' final 20 minutes Mitchell shot 33.7% from the field being outscored by Albright 31-19 in the second half.
The Lions ended with three Lions in double figures led by Cooper who finished with a season high of 14 points. Cooper went a perfect 10-10 from the free throw line adding a career high eight rebounds and tying her career high with five assists. 14 points pushed Cooper over 300 career points.
Gigi Serrano notched a season-high 13 points on 5-9 shooting from the floor. The junior guard added two rebounds and two assists.
Jones recoded her fourth straight game in double figures to start the season having 12 points in tonight's game. The sophomore Jones entered tonight's game as the third leading scorer on a per game basis in the Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC). For good measure Jones filled up the box score having six rebounds, four assists and two steals.
CJ Apistar tallied eight points, three rebounds and assist.
Ciarra Gibbs chipped in with six points in 19 minutes off the bench.
Albright recorded 18 steals, having 28 points off turnovers to Mitchell's 12 points off turnovers. The Lions doubled up the Mariners, having 40 points in the paint to the oppositions 20.
