READING, Pa. – Albright women's tennis is heading back to the MAC Commonwealth finals after beating Stevenson 4-0 in Wednesday's semifinals. Albright will host the Championship match on Saturday, May 3 against Messiah in hopes of repeating as MAC Commonwealth champions.
Alex Pancu tied the program record for most wins at #1 singles this afternoon with her 61
st career victory.
Albright women's tennis is officially heading back to the MAC Commonwealth finals. The Lions will look to become the first repeat champion in the Commonwealth since Lebanon Valley did so in the 2022 and 2023 seasons.
Today's win is the 16
th overall this season for the Lions and marks the third straight win in Commonwealth playoff matches.
Alex Pancu won her 61
st career No. 1 singles match winning in straight sets today 6-3, 6-1. The 61 career win ties Pancu with Victoria Foanio for the most #1 singles wins in school history. Pancu will have the opportunity to break the record in Saturday's championship match.
Allison Horick made quick work of her opponent this afternoon winning 6-0, 6-0. Horick has quickly become one of the better players in the conference this season and proved that today with another straight sets win. Horick has not lost this season with 11 of her 13 total wins coming in straight sets.
Alaina Smith was the second Lion to end their singles match giving the Lions their third team point of the afternoon. Smith won 6-1, 6-1 to put the Lions on the cusp of victory. Smith improved to 15-1 this afternoon and has won her last 15 straight matches all in straight sets.
In doubles, the Lions were not going to be denied as the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles teams won easily. Pancu and Horick won 6-1 in No. 1 doubles and
Michelle Timothy and
Elicia Aponte won 6-0.
Aponte was well on her way to victory in No. 4 singles. When the match was called due to Albright picking up their fourth point, Aponte was in command holding a scoreline in her favor of 6-1, 5-1.
