Heidi Mau Named Faculty Athletic Representative

READING, Pa. – Dr. Heidi Mau was named the new Faculty Athletic Representative at Albright College. Mau is an Associate Professor in the Department of English & Communications.

Dr. Mau teaches courses in the areas of digital literacy, design, and media studies. Mau is lead faculty for the Digital Communications major and the Visual Communication Design co-major and minor. Dr. Mau's research is in media and communication, intersecting areas of digital and popular cultures, gender and sexuality, and memory studies.

Dr. Mau is currently working on two larger projects, one looking at media entertainment and fan cultures, and a second project that examines how the collective memory of Harvey Milk is communicated and shaped over time.

As an active research collaborator, with projects ranging from co-authoring a book chapter on a history of women's roller derby uniforms with sport philosopher Dr. Colleen English of Penn State Berks, to working with Dr. Cheryl L. Nicholas (also PSU Berks) as Concept and Production Associate for Dr. Nicholas' VR Exhibition and 360-degree video experience: Malaysian WWII Oral Histories: A Digital/Virtual Experience.

Dr. Mau obtained a B.S. in Arts and Media from Grand Valley State University, and an M.F.A. in Film and Media Arts from the School of Communications and Theater of Temple University. Later in her career she completed a Ph.D. in Media and Communication from Klein College of Media & Communication, also from Temple University.

As for her background as an athlete, Dr. Mau varsity-lettered in tennis, was an outfielder and pinch hitter on the softball team, and defender on a co-ed intramural soccer team during her high school tenure. Since then, her interaction with athletics has been more within the world of media production and as a spectator.

During her undergraduate and post-graduate years in Grand Rapids, Michigan, she was an audio board operator during college sports for the NPR-affiliate campus radio station. Some of her other sport production freelance positions included being a slow-motion replay operator for a boxing match and a field camera operator for a local charity golf tournament. In Columbus, Ohio, she was an on-court camera operator during a few of the Ohio State University women's basketball games. As one of the few female operators at the time, she was granted access to then-coach Nancy Darsch's locker room pep talks during halftime.

Dr. Mau also previously taught at the University of Oklahoma, where it is practically a job requirement to know the ins and outs of college football, and was there during the beginning years of coach Bob Stoops.

Dr. Mau is a soccer fan and has attended the Women's World Cup in Canada, France, and Australia/New Zealand. She is currently saving up for the 2027 games in Brazil. Fun fact: Her mother-in-law played field hockey for the Malaysian national team in the mid-1960s. Dr. Mau looks forward to working with athletics, student athletes, faculty, and administration during her service as Albright College's NCAA Faculty Athletic Representative. Go Lions!
