READING, Pa. – Women's Basketball (10-15, 6-8 MAC Commonwealth) took the court for the final time this season against York (10-15, 8-6 MAC Commonwealth). Both put on a defensive clinic until a thriller of a fourth quarter would see the Spartans leave with a 39-37 win over the Lions.
Prior to the start of the game, the team took a moment to honor seniors
Aaliyah Burton,
Devon Sonzogni,
CJ Apistar Orianna Edmond and
Julia Zakovitch.
Julia Zakovitch had a senior day to remember and scored the first six points for the Lions and finished tied for the team lead with 10. A number of Zakovitch's second half buckets came after offensive boards for clutch second chance points.
Also ending the night in double figures was
Orianna Edmond who tallied 10 of her own while recording three blocks. The Senior ends her collegiate career with 684 rebounds and 112 blocks.
Halftime saw a narrow Spartans lead by a score of 15-13 after neither team could find long stretches of offensive momentum in the opening 20 minutes of play.
Chrisdin Jones would help spark some momentum off the bench with eight points while tying for the team lead in rebounds with eight and dishing out three assists.
Both teams went back and forth in seizing momentum in the final 20 minutes as both offenses started to find their strides.
CJ Apistar helped keep up the defensive intensity and played 39 of 40 minutes and recorded a game high five steals.
In the final minutes, the Lions would cut the Spartans' lead to two (39-37) after trailing by as many as nine (32-23) earlier in the quarter. No further buckets would be scored in the final minutes as the Lions missed a potential game tying shot at the buzzer.
