EWING, N.J. – Men's wrestling will send two wrestlers to the NCAA Championships after placing inside the top three at the NCAA Regionals Region III Championships.
Trent Mahoney was crowned champion at 157 pounds while
Danny Metzler placed second at 141 pounds.
Coming into the day, four Lions were featured. Mahoney, Metzler,
Davis Keppley and
Beknazar Baiyshbekov all advanced to day two.
To earn a spot in the National Championships, you had to place inside the top three in your respective weight class at Regionals. Albright competed throughout the weekend in the Region III section of Regionals.
Mahoney went a perfect 4-0 on his way to winning the title at 157 pounds. Mahoney has been dominant all season long and this weekend was no different. Of the four wins, three of them came by fall including the 157-pound title bout. In the final, Mahoney left no doubt who the best wrestler in the region is earning a second period fall to stand atop the podium.
Mahoney is no stranger to the National Championships after competing in them when he wrestled for Division II King's College (TN).
Metzler went on a fantastic run after being seeded 15
th prior to the start of the tournament. Overall Metzler made the 141-pound final, beating the 18, 10, 2 and six seeds. Before the 141-pound final began, Metzler already qualified for the National Championships in March. Vincent Santaniello from TCNJ earned the individual title at 141.
Keppley took sixth place at 174 pounds, going 4-3 overall at Regionals. Keppley earned a spot in the 174 fifth and sixth place bout by earning a major decision previously. Baiyshbekov took sixth as well ending his tournament with a 2-3 record.
Beknazar Baiyshbekov won his first two bouts of the weekend to earn a spot on the podium this afternoon.
As a team Albright finished in sixth place with 88 points. Messiah finished with 133.5 points while Arcadia finished with 98.5 points marking the only two teams in the field that is a Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) member institution to beat the Lions. A total of nine teams were featured at Regionals from the MAC.
TCNJ won the team title with 170 points followed by NYU in second with 136 points and Messiah in third.
