READING, Pa. – Men's wrestling (12-5) concluded their home schedule defeating York (7-7) 34-11 on Saturday afternoon on senior day. Albright concludes their home schedule at a perfect 5-0.
Earlier this week Albright entered the national rankings in their first season as a program since 1965. The Lions were tabbed #22 in the Open Mat rankings and #24 in the National Wrestling Coaches Association poll. Both rankings mark the highest Albright has ever been ranked in program history.
Today's win is the fourth in a row for the Lions. With one more Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) opponent on the schedule, Albright stands at 5-1 within the conference.
Prior to the start of the match the program took the time to honor and recognize graduating seniors
Quinton Frampton and
Trent Mahoney.
York came into the match ranked two spots ahead of Albright in the polls. The Spartans started strong jumping out to a 6-0 lead.
Danny Metzler turned the tide for the Lions at 141. Metzler found himself in a hole early down 9-2 at the end of the first period. Over the final four minutes, Metzler found a different gear coming all the way back on a takedown in the third period to lead 13-11. He would close out the match and earn a riding time bonus point giving Albright momentum.
Including Metzler Albright won every bout from 141-184. In that stretch Albright got bonus points from
Seth Karpulk (149),
Trent Mahoney (157),
Beknazar Baiyshbekov (165),
Davis Keppley (174) and
Abdoul Akala (184).
Karpulk, Mahoney, Baiyshbekov and Akala all earned falls while Keppley won by tech fall 16-1.
With the match well in hand in favor of Albright.
Joseph Gassert (HWT) electrified the crowd with an overtime win. With under 20 seconds remaining Gassert trailed by two needing a takedown to prolong the bout. Gassert got the takedown and then walked it off on a takedown in overtime to put a stamp on the match.
