Joey Severns was named the first assistant coach in the history of the men’s lacrosse program in June 2011. Severns came to Albright from Oberlin College in Oberlin, Ohio, where he spent the previous year as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator.
As assistant to head coach Jake Plunket, Severns is responsible for all aspects of developing the Albright men’s lacrosse program. His duties include recruiting future players and working with Coach Plunket on all facets of practice and game-day planning.
In 2013, the Lions won the ECAC Mid-Atlantic championship and qualified for a second consecutive Commonwealth Conference playoffs. Albright defeated #16 Widener in the regular season, and earned votes in the national polls in just their season year as a team.
Albright's first-ever varsity season was historic, as the Lions went 16-3 and earned the top seed in the Middle Atlantic Conference playoffs, losing to Widener in the Commonwealth Conference championship game.
During his one season at Oberlin, Severns helped the program to a 7-9 record, which included a three-game win streak to close out the 2011 campaign. Under head coach Topher Grossman, who was named the 2011 North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) Coach of the Year, Severns was responsible for reviewing game film and coming up with game-day strategy and practice plans. Working primarily with the defense, Severns played a major part in helping the Yeomen hold nationally ranked Wittenberg University to less than 10 goals this past season.
Severns’ collegiate career began in upstate New York, where he was a starting attackman and team captain at SUNY Morrisville. As the team’s leader, Severns led the Mustangs to their first winning season in over five years, and received both conference and regional honors.
Following the 2006 season, Severns transferred to Virginia to play for Hampden Sydney College. With Plunket serving as an assistant coach, Severns helped the Tigers to their first top-20 national ranking and a program-best 13 wins in his senior season.
Severns, who resides in Reading, Pa., graduated from Hampden Sydney in May 2010 with a bachelor’s degree in history.
