READING, Pa. - It was a close back and forth battle from start to finish, as the Lady Lions looked to get their 2009-2010 season off to a good start. With a double-double from #Mallory Olsheski# and an 11 point outing from #Jessica McGinness#, Albright picked up the victory defeating Cabrini College 47-45 Wednesday evening in the Bollman Center.
Olsheski ended the non-conference contest with 12 boards and 11 points. McGinness came off the bench Wednesday evening and was 4-for-6 from the field, and 1-for-3 from behind the arc. At the free throw line the Norristown native was 2-for-2, and on the boards she tallied six rebounds.
For the visiting Cavaliers of Cabrini Kate Walck and Alyssa Brady combined for 31 points respectively. Brady led the contest with 17 points and paced her team with nine rebounds. Walck tallied 14 points of her own and added seven boards to her line as well.
Looking like their meeting a year ago, the two teams went up and down the court exchanging both points and turnovers. Overall Albright and Cabrini combined for 47 turnovers as the two teams tried to gain control of the scoreboard.
Through the opening minutes of Wednesday's contest both teams struggled to find that offensive spark. At around the 10 minute mark of the first half, Cabrini did manage to take a solid lead.
However with time winding down Albright managed to work their way back into the game and take a one point lead with about two minutes left before the half. Cabrini did answer right back with less than a minute to go, and held onto a one point lead of their own before heading into the locker room.
Following the intermission, Cabrini added some more distance between them and the Lions. They managed to increase their lead to five in the first four minutes of the new half.
With McGinness at the helm, the Lions quickly came back retaking the lead following back-to-back jumpers. From there the lead would once again bounce back and forth up until the halfway point of the second half. It was at that point that the Cavaliers went on a 9-0 run to take a 41-33 lead.
That lead did not last however, as Albright cut the lead to one following back-to-back three's from McGinness and #Rory Yerkes#. McGinness then tied the game at 41-41 on her only trip to the free throw line.
Junior #Rose Williamson# made it a two point game on her last jumper of the night to make it 43-41 in favor of the Lions. Cabrini tied the score one last time, before Albright managed to squeeze out a quick run of their own, which gave them enough insurance on the scoreboard and the win.
