Bears Claw Past Lady Lions in Tip-Off Championship

Box Score

READING, Pa. - Led by tournament MVP Carolyn Konstanzer the Bears of Ursinus College (2-0) defeated the host Lady Lions (2-1) by the final score of 58-50 to claim the first annual Albright Women's Basketball Tip-Off tournament championship Sunday afternoon in the Bollman Center.

Konstanzer led the team and tournament with her strong play on both sides of the court. Against Albright, Konstanzer recorded the games only double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds. All-Tournament selections Lindsay Teuber and Julie Brown also contributed to the Bears championship as they totaled 15 points and 12 boards respectively.

For the Lady Lions all-tournament selections Jessica McGinness and Becca Pollack tallied 22 points respectively, while Pollack pulled down a team high nine rebounds alongside senior Mallory Olsheski. In her first tournament with the red and white Pollack had two solid performances earning a weekend total of 24 points and 18 boards. She also totaled two assists, one block, and five steals as well.

Throughout Sunday's contest the score remained close, with Ursinus holding onto a slim lead for a majority of it. Albright was only able to take control of the scoreboard once in the early minutes of the first half. Before and after that little offensive spark, the Bears never allowed the red and white to even the score.

In the opening minutes of the championship game, both teams struggled to end the scoreless drought. The afternoon's first basket did not get recorded until the 17th minute mark on a lay-up from Konstanzer. Scoring the Lions first basket of the game was Gina Zantopoulos less than a minute later which made it a one point game at that time.

The largest lead Ursinus was able to earn over Albright came with about two minutes left when a slew of Bear players led their team to a 8-0 run before freshman Kari Ludy could close out the half with a 3-pointer as time expired to make it 26-20.

Moving into the second half, Ursinus continued to gain some breathing room over the Lions. However despite their best efforts the Bears never really broke free from the red and white as the Lady Lions managed to stay in the game with clutch shooting by a variety of players.

Albright tried to battle back throughout the half, but could not spark that run they so desperately needed. With about a minute to play the red and white did cut the Bears lead to two after Rory Yerkes made back-to-back free throws.

Ursinus then responded in kind with a quick 4-0 run at the free throw line to secure their 58-50 win.

Also earning a place on this year's all-tournament team was Rowan Universities Amanda Jennings. The Profs took third place in this year's tournament with their 81-60 win over Penn State Harrisburg in the afternoon's first game.

Women's Basketball returns to action on Tuesday when they hit the road for the first time this season and travel to Richard Stockton College for a 6 p.m. non-conference game.
