No. 13 Stockton Ends Lions Unbeaten Streak at Monarch Classic

Box Score

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – The previously unbeaten Lions (6-1) streak came to an end Friday evening at the hands of the nationally ranked Ospreys of Richard Stockton College (6-2) in the first round of the King's College Monarch/Ramada Inn tournament. The 2009 Division III National runner-ups defeated the Lions by the score of 72-62 in Scandlon Gymnasium.

Leading the Osprey's with a game high 21 points was Santini Lancioni. He was joined by Omar Smith, who totaled 14 points and 15 rebounds and Kai Massaquoi who recorded 10 points of his own. Lancioni also led the evening with six assists and three steals in 38 minutes of playing time. As a team Stockton shot over 44% from the field and 46% from three point range. At the free throw line the Osprey's shot 50%.

For the Lions junior Andrew Pomager led his squad with 16 points on a 6-for-16 showing from the field, which included one 3-point basket. At the free throw line Pomager was 3-for-7 and was just one rebound away from his first double-double of the season as he totaled nine boards on the night.

Also proving to be one of the Lions top performers was Matt Ashcroft who tallied 14 points in the non-conference loss. The junior guard continues to have his best season to date since coming to Albright averaging 16.7 points per game, while shooting 52% from the field, 43% from behind the arc, and 84% from the line.

The evening got off to a wild start as the two teams battled back and forth with Albright leading the way for a majority of the first half. The two teams were deadlocked a total of four times in the opening half, but it was Albright who led on the scoreboard going into the halftime break.

Unfortunately, the red and white were unable to maintain that momentum in the final half of play, as Stockton came storming back at around the 12 minute mark. To start the second half, the score remained close between the two squads but with a quick 8-0 run by the Osprey's, the Lions trailed Stockton 51-43 with about eight minutes to play

That burst gave the Osprey's the momentum they needed as the Lions were unable to claw their way back into the contest. Anytime Albright tried to close the gap on the scoreboard, Stockton would fire right back on the next play.

Playing a major part in the Stockton comeback was their ability to convert on 50% of their shot attempts through the second half. Albright, who shot over 48% from the field in the first half, shot just 22% in the second.

Men's Basketball will now face the host Monarchs in the consolation game tomorrow at 1 p.m. Stockton will take on Susquehanna University in the championship game of the tournament. The Crusaders defeated King's by the final score of 61-54 in the final game of the night.
