Women's Basketball Downs Penn State Berks, 76-67

Box Score

READING, Pa. – With a game-high 19 points by senior Jessica McGinness women's basketball (2-2) picked-up a hard fought non-conference win over local rival Penn State Berks (1-2) as they defeated the Nittany Lions by the final score of 76-67 Saturday afternoon at Beaver Community Center.

Also fueling Albright's win were MariLynn McMonagle and Rory Yerkes who each scored 16 points. On the day, Albright shot over 44% from the field and 33% from 3-point range. Freshman Meghan Boyle recorded her fourth consecutive game with 10 or more rebounds, as the 6'0” center pulled down a game-high 12 boards. The red and white out rebounded Berks 45-38, and held a 14-11 advantage in steals and 5-2 advantage in blocks.

With the exception of the first five minutes, Albright controlled Saturday's non-conference match-up both from the field and on the glass. After a Yerkes lay-up which gave the Lions a one-point lead, Berks was only able to tie the score three more times in the first half.

By the midway point of the opening half, the red and white gained their largest lead of the contest following on a Yerkes 3-pointer. Berks did manage to cut that lead down to one, but with a quick run by the Lions offense jumped out to a nine point lead with just under six minutes to play.

However, Berks managed to chip away at Albright's lead and cut it two before the halftime break. After the intermission, the two teams remained in a back and forth battle with Berks tying the score two more times. The red and white would never allow the Nittany Lions to retake the lead and used an eight point run to take a 58-49 lead with nine minutes left to play.

Albright's largest lead of the day did not come until the final seconds when Yerkes recorded back-to-back free throws to make it an 11-point game (75-64).

Women's Basketball returns to action on Wednesday when they host Alvernia University at 6 p.m. in the Commonwealth Conference season opener.
