Alvernia Hands Women's Basketball First Conference Loss

Box Score

READING, Pa. – Led by a double-double from Angela Altemose, the Alvernia University Crusaders (3-3, 1-0 Commonwealth Conference) were able to win in comfortable fashion over women's basketball(2-3, 0-1) by the score of 70-58, Wednesday evening at the Bollman Center in a conference opener for both teams.

Altemose posted 13 points and pulled down 18 rebounds while dominating the paint in Wednesday's contest. The Crusaders backcourt duo of Julie Hahn and Brittany Young also led in the effort as they posted 19 and 16 points respectively. Hahn also hit Alvernia's only two three-point shots. Forward Allie Toczylowski also finished with a double-double as she deposited 10 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to enable Alvernia to defeat their cross-town rival.

The first half was a forgettable one for both sides as neither team could find a rhythm offensively. Albright committed 15 turnovers to Alvernia's 12, and as a result neither side could pull away. Besides the turnovers, both teams had trouble shooting the ball as well. Albright shot just 30.0% in the half while Alvernia posted a 32.4% clip. The lead changed hands five times. However, with some timely offensive rebounding from Altemose, Alvernia was able to take a 25-21 lead into the intermission.

Alvernia was able to pull away in the middle of the second half as Young and Hahn started to hit their shots and lead the fast break more effectively. Albright continued to struggle with their outside shooting and ended the game hitting only 2 of 19 three-point shots. Top offensive threat Jessica McGinness kept Albright close with 16 points that included some tough drives to the basket. The senior guard also pulled down six rebounds, dished five assists and had three steals to complete a solid all-around effort for the Lady Lions.

Rory Yerkes and Meghan Boyle also finished the contest in doubles figures for the Lady Lions. Yerkes shot 7 for 14 from the field to finish with 17 points to go along with four assists. Boyle continued her stellar freshman campaign as she recorded her fourth double-double in five games. She battled with Alvernia's inside threats from start to finish ending the night with 10 points and 12 rebounds.

Albright will search for their first conference win on Saturday afternoon as they travel to Lycoming College for a 1 p.m. tip-off.
