Second Half Surge Pushes Women's Basketball Past Dickinson

Box Score

Reading, Pa. - After a sluggish first half in which it found itself down by nine going into the break, women's basketball (3-4) started firing on all cylinders and was able to explode past visiting Dickinson College (3-4) by the score of 78-70 on Wednesday evening in the Bollman Center.

Albright was led by inside force Meghan Boyle, who once again recorded a double-double. Boyle ended the night with 18 points on 6 for 10 shooting from the field and pulled down 16 rebounds. The freshman forward led Albright in outscoring Dickinson 38 to 18 in the paint.

The rest of Albright's starting lineup wasn't far behind in terms of production. Jessica McGinness recorded 18 points, four rebounds and four steals while also hitting two shots from behind the arc. Backcourt mate Rory Yerkes dropped in 16 points of her own while dishing a team-high six assists. And forward MariLynn McMonagle contributed to the balanced scoring attack by depositing 16 points to go along with eight rebounds and three steals.

Coming off a heartbreaking overtime loss to Lycoming, Albright couldn't find much of a rhythm in the opening 20 minutes and both sides had a hard time taking care of the ball. The two teams battled back and forth until Dickinson made a 10-4 run in the final seven minutes of the period to take their largest lead of the game into the intermission.

Albright came out storming in the second half and would tie the game on a jumper from center Rose Williamson with 16:09 left to play. The home team then took the lead on a layup by McGinness forty seconds later and would never relinquish it. Dickinson would get as close as six with two minutes to play, but Albright was able to hold on with clutch free-throw shooting from Yerkes.

Albright's success in the second half was due in large part to its three-point shooting and a great effort from the foul line. The Lady Lions hit all five of their nine three-point attempts in the half, and ended up shooting 50% from the field after the intermission. They also shot an efficient 11 for 14 from the charity stripe to seal the victory.

Dickinson was led by forward Alesha Sisco, who finished with 20 points and six rebounds on the night. Guard Dana Walsh also paced the visitors with 15 points. Also finishing in double figures for Dickinson were Carole Dempsey and Lindsay Finnerty, who finished with 12 and 10 points in the contest. Sisco and Dempsey both surpassed the 1,000 point mark for their careers in the first half.

Albright will look to continue its winning ways when it takes on Moravian College on Saturday at 2 p.m. in the Bollman Center.
