READING, Pa. - Led by Dori Gyori's 17 points the #16/17 Falcons of Messiah College (21-4/11-3 CC) closed out the regular season with a 62-48 conference win over the Lady Lions (8-16/4-10 CC) Saturday afternoon at the Bollman Center.
Saturday's loss marked the final game of the 2009-10 season for the Lady Lions as they were unable to overcome the Falcons. Prior to the start of the contest Albright honored it's three senior members in
Mallory Olsheski,
Amanda Medoro, and
Jalene Warker.
Overall it was
Rory Yerkes and
Gina Zantopoulos that led the red and white in scoring on Saturday each totaling nine points. Yerkes also led the game with five assists and had one steal as well. Zantopoulos came off the bench to record her team-high performance. The sophomore shot 50% from the field and at the charity strip. Yerkes was 2-for-6 from the floor, which included one three-point basket, and was a perfect 4-for-4 at the line.
However when it came to a solid showing at the line, no one could top Gyori who was 9-for-9 on the afternoon. Also finishing in double-figures was Julie Henninger who totaled 13 points. As a team the Falcons almost never missed closing out the day having made 22 of their 26 opportunities. From the field Messiah shot 38.8% and behind the arc they were 2-for-9.
Albright's offense got off to a very slow start in the first half shooting just 26.9%. They did manage to regroup in the second half, and with a late push managed to close out the day shooting 35.2% from the field.
It was in the second half, that the Lady Lions began to really pressure Messiah. The Lady Lions took Messiah's 16 point lead at the half and cut it down to seven around the 11 minute mark. The Falcons did manage to hold on in the end and regained a double-figure lead over the red and white.
As time winded down in the contest, the three senior members left the court to a standing ovation by fans, friends, coaches and teammates.
