ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. – It was a tough afternoon all around for women's basketball (5-8/1-4 Commonwealth) as they suffered a tough Commonwealth Conference loss at the hands of Elizabethtown College (9-5/2-3 Commonwealth) Saturday afternoon at Thompson Gymnasium. The Blue Jays defeated the Lady Lions by the final score of 67-47.
Leading Elizabethtown to the conference victory was a trio of double-figure scorers in Stephanie Ellwood, Kaity Snyder, and Jayci Scannapieco. Ellwood all scorers with 16 points, followed by Snyder who had 13, and Scannapieco with 10.
MariLynn McMonagle was the only double-figure scorer for the Lions as she finished the afternoon with a team-best 13 points.
Playing a major part in the Lions conference loss on Saturday was their inability to possess the ball, having turned the ball over a combined 21 times. As a team, Albright also struggled from the floor shooting just 29% on 17-of-59 shooting and 25% from behind the arc (4-16). At the line they were 9-for-11 overall and on the glass, the Elizabethtown held a slim 43-41 advantage.
The afternoon got off to a great start for Albright as they battled back and forth with the Blue Jays. After falling into an early seven point hole the red and white battled back to cut their lead to one with just under 12 minutes to play. Back-to-back three's from
Kari Ludy and McMonagle quickly put the offensive momentum in the corner of the Lions.
After McGinness went 2-for-2 at the line, Albright took control of the scoreboard with a 14-13 lead. McMonagle then made it a three point game after she put in an easy lay-up moments later.
Unfortunately, the Blue Jays used a 19-3 run to jump out to a 13 point lead with 3:13 left in the half. Elizabethtown would maintain a double-figure lead to close out the half (34-23). That lead would quickly jump to 18 in the second half, as the Blue Jays hit their stride in the opening minutes.
No matter what Albright did they could not find any rhythm on either side of the court in the second half. Elizabethtown continued to pressure the red and white, and with less than nine minutes to play extended their lead to 26.
The Lions tried to claw their way back, but the deficit proved too much for the Lions, as Elizabethtown held on to earn the conference win.
Women's basketball returns to the Bollman Center on Wednesday when they host Arcadia University at 6 p.m.
