Ursinus Rides Rebounding Margin to Win Over Lions

Box Score

Rebounding killed the Albright College women's basketball team on Tuesday night as the Lions fell  56-54 to visiting Ursinus, who held a 25-4 advantage on the offensive glass.

Sophomore Meghan Boyle led the way with 14 points, while senior Jenny Knoebel had 10 points and seven rebounds. Sophomore Shawn Barcynski had a team-high nine boards, and freshman Amanda Tiritilli dished out four assists.

Albright had trailed 49-42 but fought back to within two points on a long-range 25-footer from Tiritilli. A big put-back from Boyle off an Albright miss made it 53-51, but a tough lay-in from Ursinus leading scorer Lindsay Teuber beat a double-team and restored the visitors' two-possession lead.

Freshman Jessica Venturelli came up big with a three-point play that made it 55-54 Ursinus with 40 seconds left on the clock. Albright forced a miss at the other end but gave up another offensive rebound to allow the Bears to escape.

Knoebel had found Boyle for a lay-up early in the first half to answer an Ursinus three-pointer. However, the Bears would jump out to a 10-2 lead thanks in part to a three-point play by Teuber.

Albright stepped up its defensive pressure, and held their opponents to just one basket over the next 7:58 to creep back into the game. Barczynski's jumped with 14:10 left finally gave the Lions their second hoop of the game, and Knoebel drove to beat the buzzer and make it 10-6 Ursinus.

Freshman Victoria Brito got to the baseline and found Boyle with a nice pass to pull Albright within two. The Lions took their only lead of the half, 17-16, on a pair of free throws from Tiritilli.

Albright actually shot 40% in the first half and forced more turnovers, but trailed 25-22 at the break due to the taller Bears holding an 11-1 advantage in offensive rebounds.

Knoebel drained a three on the first possession of the second half to make it 25-all. The game was then tied at 27 and 29 as the teams traded points.

History repeated itself as junior Kari Ludy executed nice drives from the left side and banked in shots on consecutive possessions. Tiritilli then found Barczynski twice in a row from the left side as Albright edged ahead 35-34.

Ursinus opened up a five-point lead on Kristy George's three, and led by seven on Teuber's tough fast break bucket before the Lions nearly made a late comeback.

Teuber put up a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds for the Bears, while sophomore Sarah Martin had 11 boards.

Albright falls to 2-2 and will travel to Centenary on Sunday.
