Box Score
The Albright College women's basketball team led for three separate stretches in the first half but was un-done by a dominant second stanza from Crusader
Angela Altemose as the Lions fell 74-59, Wednesday night at Alvernia.
Senior
Jenny Knoebel hit a string of three-pointers and finished with a team-high 19 points, including 5-of-9 shooting from behind the arc. Sophomore
Meghan Boyle (14 points, 10 boards) turned in a double-double, and junior
Kari Ludy added eight rebounds and three steals.
For Alvernia, Altemore finished with 30 points on 14-of-18 shooting (including a perfect 8-for-8 in the second period). Guard
Kaitlyn Yoh also had a great day, going 6-of-7 from the field for 13 points.
Altemose got things going for the Crusaders right out of the locker room with a three-point play on the first possession of the second half. She soon stripped Boyle under the Albright basket and scored to stretch Alvernia's lead to nine. Boyle returned the favor at the other end however, stealing the ball from Altemose following a missed shot and drawing the foul.
Another hoop from Altemose a minute later gave Alvernia the game's first double-digit lead at 43-32. Knoebel responded a three, but Altemose was there again for two. In total, Altemose scored nine points in a 16-point stretch of the game (over 3:03 of action) during Alvernia's 11-5 run.
Freshman
Jessica Venturelli hit treys on two straight possessions to keep Albright close at 51-43, but Alvernia soon went on an 8-0 run to help pull away. Altemose left the game with two minutes remaining, just one made field goal short of the school single-game record.
After Alvernia had scored the game's first four points, Knoebel went on a quick 8-0 run by herself. After draining a three off
Amanda Tiritilli's penetration, she spotted up again on a fast break from the left side, then completed a steal and lay-in to make it 8-4 Albright.
Cori Conner ended the run with an open jumper.
Freshman
Victoria Brito was given a chance as the first Lion off the bench and immediately drove hard to the rim and was fouled on the make. She missed the and-one opportunity but Ludy finished the put-back to give Albright a 15-12 advantage.
With just over 11 minutes left in the half,
Kelli McIntyre beat the shot clock buzzer to tie the game, with Yoh stealing the ensuing inbounds and feeding
Kerri Weber for a bank shot that gave the Crusaders the lead. Alvernia would stretch its run to 10-2 before Tiritilli broke it with one of her trademark long-range threes.
The Lions edged into the lead once more in the first half on another Knoebel three that made it 25-24 Albright. Sophomore
Kristi McFadden hit a three with 17 seconds left before McIntyre responded from 20 feet in the dying seconds of the period; Alvernia led 34-30 at the break.
Albright falls to 4-12, 0-5 and will host another nearby opponent when Lebanon Valley comes to the Bollman Center on Saturday.
