The Albright College men's swimming team lost for the first time in over a year, falling by a razor-thin margin of 103-102 on Wednesday at Ursinus.
A pair of relay finishes, by a total of .68 seconds, made the difference in the decision.
Ursinus out-touched Albright in the opening 200 medley relay, with
John Wieczorek getting to the wall just .24 seconds ahead of Albright anchor
Tim Pierce.
The Lions then needed to go 1-2 in the final 200 free relay to win the meet. Pierce,
Matt Bauer,
Adam Kurtz and
Mike McBride did their part with a first-place finish, but Ursinus beat out Albright's “B” team by just .44 seconds to hand the Lions their first dual meet loss since November 15, 2011.
Sophomore
Rick Sutton was second in the 1000 free, in 10:22.19. In the 200 free,
Ralph Porrazzo (1:48.54) and McBride recovered to take 1-2 placing for the Lions.
The Red and White added a second consecutive 1-2 finish in the 50 free, from
Matt Runtas (22.00) and
Alex Bauer (22.11). In the 200 IM, Adam Vogel was second (2:04.77).
Bauer then took second in the 100 fly (53.94), and McBride/Runtas led yet another 1-2 Albright finish in the 100 free.
Porrazzo took the 100 back (54.33), but conference champion Sutton was beaten for a second time by Ursinus'
Scott Paine, taking second in the 500 free.
Ursinus also won the 100 breast, but
Josh Park (1:02.55) and Vogel took second and third place to keep Albright alive heading into the final relay.
The Lions are 3-1, 3-0 and will host Arcadia on Saturday in a Middle Atlantic Conference meet.
