The Albright College men's basketball team outlasted Stevenson 84-81, Saturday in a Commonwealth Conference battle.
Junior
Pedro Perez had 18 points, while senior
Dave Singleton added 24 points and 10 rebounds. Also contributing were
Zach Benjamin (10 points, seven rebounds) and
Kyle Jordan (13 points, six rebouds).
Singleton made a clutch jumper with less than two minutes to play to give Albright a 77-74 lead. He then hit two free throws to stretch the gap to 79-75 with 59 seconds to play, and hit a huge jumper to make it 81-77.
Sam Marrella's jumper made it 9-4 early in a first half that finished with the Lions leading 37-33.
Singleton went 2-on-3 on the break and fed a trailing Perez to break a 9-9 deadlock. Singleton then stole the ball as the Mustangs attempted to bring it up and was fouled, making both free throws for a 13-9 lead.
Alphonzo Hawkins' three-point play soon tied the game at 14-14. Stevenson then inched ahead by a point as
Tyson Jacobs made one of two free throws. Consecutive hoops by Hawkins soon had the Mustangs ahead 19-14.
The Lions fought back as Marrella's three with 9:16 left in the first half tied it at 19-19, and Jordan followed that with a basket to put Albright back in front.
Reuel Moore's steal led to Perez finding Jordan on the break, stretching Albright's run to 13-0. Stevenson called timeout with the score 27-19 Lions. The Mustangs finally broke the run but Moore answered immediately with a three-pointer.
Singleton opened the second half with a nice backdoor cut to make it 39-33 Albright.
Christian Roberts answered with a triple. Roberts then made a jumper as Stevenson took a 40-39 advantage.
With 14:27 remaining, Stevenson's
Stefon McCray made a basket and was fouled. Out of the timeout he sank the free throw to put the hosts up 46-45.
Singleton found Perez under the hoop with a no-look pass to go up 50-49 as the teams continued to trade baskets. Jordan's hard drive on the next possession pushed the lead to three points.
After Stevenson took a lead with 9:32 to go,
Andre Marshall went right down the other way and scored while being fouled to tie the contest at 58-58. Albright led 67-63 after a pull-up three from Perez, but Jacobs answered immediately from behind the arc.
The Lions improve to 8-1, 4-1 on the season and will face Muhlenberg on Tuesday down in Puerto Rico.
