The Albright College field hockey team took on the University of Scranton this afternoon at Shirk Stadium and victory belonged to the Lady Lions following three second half goals.
The Lions now go to 5-1 and continue their streak, making it five wins in a row. The final score was 3-1, with all four goals coming after halftime.
The game drew a supportive crowd and warm sun, despite a steady breeze. The Royals fought aggressively to keep the ball out of their own territory, as the Lions' offense dominated possession for most of the game. When the ball came into Albright territory the Lady Lion defense was quick to defend.
The first half ended scoreless despite many long offensive possessions from the Lions. Scranton's
Gretchen Kempf appeared to be the team's most threatening force, with six shots in the first half. The opposition slowly faded, as the Lions' ended the half with an exciting drive toward the Royals goal, which was cut short as the clock ran out.
The Lions' intensity picked up at the start of play in the second half. The first goal of the game came early in the second period on a corner from
Kaitlyn Pietrusewicz, assisted by
Amanda Smith. The second goal came again from Albright, 10 minutes later. This time it was
Alyssa Tourdot's effort, assisted by
Genna Lapola.
Albright followed shortly thereafter with yet another goal. Allison Dombrowski was assisted by Pietrusewicz to bring the score to a comfortable 3-0.
With 11:00 to go, Scranton scored their only goal of the game. The ball was knocked in by the Royals in a group effort after an initial save by Albright goalie
Marguerite DeLucas. Albright was aided by 13 penalty corners in the second half, after having only one in the first. Scranton had none in the second, after three in the first.
On Wednesday, September 19, the Lions host Delaware Valley College at 4:00 pm. The weather is to be sunny with a high of 70 degrees. The Aggies are currently 2-3 this season.
