Albright College senior
Ralph Porrazzo broke a pair of long-standing pool records, helping the Albright College men's swimming team to an impressive 124-81 victory over Ursinus on Wednesday.
The Bears had edged Albright by one point last season, and were the only Division III team to defeat the Lion men in dual meet competition since January, 2011.
In the 100 back, Porrazzo swam 52.97 to break a mark of 53.08 that had been held since 2004 by Kutztown's
Matt Rowan. He was challenged the entire way by Ursinus'
Chase Renninger (53.29).
Porrazzo,
Ken Richardson,
Alex Bauer and
Matt Runtas opened the competition with a pool record of 1:37.49 in the 200 medley relay. They took a mark that had lasted since 2005 and shattered it by over two seconds.
Ursinus'
Marcus Wagner gave Albright's
Rick Sutton a run in a fast 1000 free, but Sutton held off his final charge to win with a time of 10:04.80.
Later, Wagner (4:54.69) would edge Sutton (4:54.78) by less than a tenth-second in an incredibly close 500 free showdown.
The Lions pulled away in the team competition by going 1-2 in a pair of freestyle events. Porrazzo (1:46.65) and
Mike McBride (1:49.09) led the 200, and Bauer (22.06) and Runtas took the top spots at 50 yards.
Richardson (2:02.84) and
Stephen Thomas (2:04.86) went 1-2 in the 200 IM. Bauer followed that up with a victory in the 100 fly, with a time of 53.24.
In the 100 free, McBride won with a time of 48.89; Runtas was second in 50.28. Richardson added yet another win, this time in the 100 breast (1:03.03).
Albright improves to 4-0 and will travel to Arcadia on Saturday.
