Four matches went to tiebreakers but the Albright College men's tennis team could only secure one point, losing 8-1 at home to Alvernia on Tuesday.
Thomas Werner had the longest battle, losing 4-6, 6-4, 12-10 to
Ben Daubenspeck at sixth singles to close out the match.
The third set featured multiple long volleys, and Werner won perhaps the longest one to fight off elimination and tie the set at 9-9.
Daubenspeck drew Werner in to the net for a 10-9 lead, but couldn't return a strong serve to again knot things up. Daubenspeck finally grabbed two consecutive points to end the match however.
Terrence Goode and
Joe Monzo outlasted Daubenspeck and
Jacob Conapitski at third doubles, winning a tie-breaker 9-8 (7-4).
Second doubles was also close, with
Sean Purcell and
Cain Walter dropping an 8-5 decision. Junior
Ian Moore battled through injury in a first doubles loss, before finally withdrawing early in his singles match.
Purcell and Walter also went to tiebreakers in tough singles losses. Pucell was beaten 6-0, 7-6 (7-4) in third singles, and Walter dropped a 6-3, 7-6 (7-5) decision in the fifth spot.
Albright is 3-9, 1-3 in the conference, while Alvernia improves to 8-8, 4-2.
