Box Score
Poor shooting doomed the Albright College men's lacrosse team, as the Lions lost 13-8 at Messiah on Wednesday.
Albright won two-thirds of the draws, held a statistical advantage in turnovers (19-to-29) and ground balls (38-to-33), and fired off 62 shots, but still trailed 13-4 into the fourth quarter.
Messiah goalie
Brooks Arnold turned in a sterling performance, making 25 saves to just eight goals allowed and at one point saving 21 of 25 shots on goal.
Albright sophomore
Ryan Turner had a hat trick, while classmate
Philip Potter totaled two goals, three assists, and three caused turnovers. Fellow sophomore
T.J. Holston scored twice.
Defensively,
Joe Devinney and
Mike Donohoe each forced four turnovers, with Donohoe adding five ground balls.
Darian Meador had a team-high 10 ground balls.
Freshman
Matthew Lomady tallied in the final minute of the second quarter, making it 8-4 at halftime. The third period was all Messiah however, as the Falcons scored five times on eight shots and Arnold stopped all seven attempts on goal at the other end.
Arnold finally turned the ball over on a clear early in the fourth quarter, leading to a Turner goal and a 13-5 scoreline. The Lions outscored Messiah 4-0 in the fourth, but the outcome was already decided at that point.
Emblematic of their struggles, the Lions trailed 6-2 in the second quarter despite a 27-10 shot advantage. Over a sustained possession, they would miss five straight shots- Lomady high, Turner wide left, Holston wide right, Holston high and Lomady high. Messiah was finally called for a slash and Albright struck 15 seconds into the man-up advantage, with Turner converting for a 6-3 scoreline.
Albright falls to 12-3, 6-2 on the season, and will travel to Susquehanna on Saturday in the Lions regular season finale. The Red and White will then host a Commonwealth semifinal playoff game on Wednesday in Shirk Stadium.
