Box Score
The Albright College women's lacrosse team lost a conference battle with local rival Alvernia on Wednesday, dropping an 18-9 decision in Shirk Stadium.
The Lions were undone by five first half yellow cards that resulted in three man-up goals for Alvernia, and a great performance by Crusaders goalie
Victoria Kearn (11 saves).
Freshman
Erin Farrell had five goals and two caused turnovers for Albright. Classmate
Amanda Smith scored twice and caused four turnovers, while winning five draw controls.
The teams went back and forth early. With Alvernia up 1-0, Kearn charged out to make a pair of point-blank saves on Farrell.
Julie Sutton came down the other way for her second goal of the game, and a 2-0 Alvernia lead.
Farrell got Albright on the board, and freshman
Rebecca Sartorio won a throw and took it in for a nice lefty finish that tied the game at 2-2.
Farrell scored again to give Albright its only lead of the game, 3-2. Alvernia re-took a 4-3 advantage, and Kearn stoned Farrell yet again from close range.
Smith caused a turnover and scored to equal things at 4-4, and Albright's
Emily Hutson (nine saves) made a tough stop of her own on Alvernia's
Allison Bainbridge.
Alvernia made a run however, aided by some man-up opportunities, leading 10-6 after Sutton's goal. That was the score at halftime, after Bainbridge hit the crossbar late in the period.
Alvernia stretched its lead to 13-6 after the break, and Kearn continued to charge off her line, stopping both
Meghan Wilson and
Rebecca Roman from close up. She made another nice save on Farrell, but the Albright rookie then spun past two defenders and finished to make It 13-7 Crusaders.
Midway through the second half both Roman and Wilson had great chances, but were stopped by Kearn. Hutson answered at the other end, with impressive saves on
Jackie Strange and
Alyssa Verrillo.
Shooting percentage hurt Albright, as Farrell was saved four times despite her five goals, and Smith, one of the conference's most lethal shooters, was just 1-for-7 on free position shots.
Albright is 7-2, 1-1, and will travel to Lycoming on Saturday at noon.
