Eight Named to MAC All-Century Men's Track Teams

Eight Albright alums have been included on the MAC 100 All-Century Men's Track & Field Teams, as announced by the conference today.

As a part of the MAC 100 celebration, the Middle Atlantic Conference will recognize top athletes from conference history, naming student-athletes to Century Teams in each sport from each era. Eras were delineated based on conference membership and sport sponsorship. The number of individuals selected per team varies depending upon the nature of the sport. Century Teams were selected from an online fan vote combined with the MAC Sports Information Directors vote. Team members will receive a commemorative gold coin, distributed to their alma matter. Century Teams will be announced at the conclusion of each respective sport season.

Featured on the 1939-1961 team is Albert Harnly '50, who won the 1949 MAC championship in the javelin and later set a school record that still stands today. He placed fifth at the NCAA championships in 1950 (10th in 1949), and was also a standout on the Albright football team.

Leland Cappel '51 won a MAC championship in the javelin the year after Harnly graduated.

Elwood Alberts '53 won three consecutive MAC championships in the pole vault, from 1951-53.

Bill Shirk '56 won the 2-mile MAC championship in 1955, and was also a outstanding cross country runner for the Lions.

Charles Smith '59 kick-started a dominant period for the Red and White jumpers, winning three MAC titles. He took the high jump in 1957 and both the high jump and long jump two seasons later.

Walter Diehm '61 was a MAC champion in the high hurdles in his junior season.

Headlining the 1962-1973 team is MAC Hall of Fame member Grant Krow '63. Krow is Albright's only NCAA champion, winning the high jump in 1963. He was an All-American in both the high jump and triple jump that season, and placed fourth at the 1961 University (Division I) meet in the triple jump.

Also making the team from that era is Dave Boyles '70. Boyles won MAC championships in both the field and on the track, taking the high jump in 1967 and the high hurdles two years later. He placed second in the hurdles at the 1969 NCAA Regional meet.
