The Albright College Lions scored thirteen runs on twelve hits as they took game one of two to open Commonwealth Conference play in the 2014 season.
The Lions were able to capitalize on Messiah's six errors in the game. Albright's first four runs in the game came as a result of Falcon mistakes.
With two outs in the first catcher
Dylan Boll doubled and later scored on a throwing error by the Messiah shortstop.
The Falcons answered with two of their own in the bottom of the first, the result of Albright errors.
The Lions regained the lead with two in the third. Boll singled in senior
Collin Hecker, who had reached on an error and later advanced to second on a passed ball, to tie the game. Designated hitter
Zac Okonski plated Boll with a single of his own to put the team ahead.
Messiah retaliated once again scoring two in the fourth and adding three in the fifth to take a 7-4 lead. But the Lions' offense roared back with seven runs on three hits in the sixth as Albright batted around and took the lead for good.
John Medvecky started things off for the Lions with an infield single to third. Two walked batters later loaded the bases for Hecker who delivered a two run single to left center to tie the game once again. Boll attempted to bunt the runners over, but reached on a fielder's choice as the pitcher threw late to third. First baseman
Gabe Santone then walked to drive in the winning run.
The Lions added two more in the seventh and freshman
Trevor Mastria shut down the Falcons in the last frame to earn his first collegiate save and seal Albright's first conference win of the season.
This marks the third time the Lions scored ten-plus runs in consecutive games in the last eight seasons and the first since they scored ten plus runs in back-to-back games during the 2012 campaign when the fell 20-10 to Lebanon Valley and defeated Valley Forge 32-8.
The second game of the double header went to the Falcons. Junior pitcher
Alex Myers battled through 4.2 innings, striking out five, as Albright fell to Messiah 8-3 to split the day-night doubleheader.
Trailing two in the fifth the Lions tied the game when Hecker brought in catcher
Zachary Kiebler on a sacrifice fly and second baseman
Nate Peiffer scored on a pitch. It wouldn't be enough as the Falcons tagged reliever
Zach Graham with six of their own in the bottom of the sixth to take the lead.
The Lions are now 3-1, 1-1 and will finish their conference series with Messiah tomorrow at 1 pm in Fort Pierce, Florida.
