Box Score
The Albright College men's lacrosse team survived a late Whittier College run, holding off their California visitors 11-10 on Tuesday evening in Shirk Stadium.
The Lions led 10-5 with 6:50 remaining, but the Poets struck twice in a minute as
Kevin Ewing tallied and
Scott Pescheret scored right off winning the faceoff.
Matt Symes made it 10-8 with 1:51 to play. Whittier won the faceoff and
Hunter Hall found
Jonathan Kassity to make it a one-goal game with 1:09 to play.
Albright's
Darian Meador won the faceoff and instead of trying to stall he went right to the cage and beat the goalie, putting the Lions back up by two with 61 seconds to play.
The Poets didn't go away however, as
Aaron Self scored with 21 seconds to play and drew a slashing call in the process to put Whittier a man-up. Pescheret won the faceoff but threw the ball away with a chance to go for the tie.
Junior
T.J. Holston had a hat trick for the Lions, while
Ryan Turner scored twice. Meador caused three turnovers and picked up six ground balls, while junior
Joe Devinney also caused three giveaways.
Senior goalie
Jordan DiZenzo made 10 saves to earn the win, including several tough stops throughout the contest.
DiZenzo stoned Hall twice on the game's opening possession. When the Lions finally cleared, defenseman
Cody Sandy fired in his second career goal to make it 1-0.
Pescheret answered for Whitter right off the faceoff, but a rip from
Brandon Brown and a goal by Holston put the Red and White ahead 3-1.
Whittier opened the second quarter with a goal to cut Albright's lead to 4-3. On the next draw, some great team passing from Meador to Holston to
Cam Cetrone to
Ryan Turner provided an immediate response.
With Albright leading 6-4 midway through the second quarter, both Cetrone and
Bryan Smith hit posts. Holston finished off a nice pass through traffic from
Andrew Potter to make it 7-4 at halftime.
DiZenzo kept Whittier at bay for a majority of the third quarter. He made an outstanding save up high on
Maxwell Jones' point-blank shot, and later got his stick in front of
Danny Prevedel's long-range effort.
Whittier is the west coast's only Division III men's lacrosse team, and is currently on a four-game eastern trip. The Poets, who have only one home game against D-III competition in 2014, will also make road trips to the Midwest and to Colorado while playing other games against both Division II and MCLA club teams.
Albright improves to 2-3 and travels to #18 St. Mary's on Saturday- the third nationally-ranked opponent of the season for the Lions.
