The Albright College baseball team couldn't get the offense going on its final day in Florida, dropping a doubleheader 9-0, 1-0 to Western Connecticut State.
The Lions totaled 11 hits and left 14 on base across the two contests, but weren't able to get a run across against WCS.
The second game went extra innings, with Western Connecticut winning it in the bottom of the eighth after seven scoreless. Freshmen
William Nicoletto (one hit) and
Mat Costa (four hits, 2 K's) each threw three shutout innings in the contest.
Another rookie,
Micah Storms, broke out of his early-season slump with a 2-for-3 performance at the plate.
Joe Pechulis and
Kevin Belskie, two more newcomers, also had hits.
Both
Gabe Santone and Storms reached for Albright in the top of the eighth with just one out, but the Lions couldn't capitalize. WCS loaded the bases in the bottom of the frame and walked off on a sacrifice fly.
In the opener, Pechulis was 2-for-2 and
Nathan Fretz went 2-for-4, as rookies had a big impact throughout the day. Overall, eight of Albright's 11 Wednesday hits were from freshmen.
WCS scored three in each of the first two innings to take a quick 6-0 lead.
WCS got outstanding pitching throughout the day.
Craig Frobel struck out 13 in just seven innings to earn the game one victory.
Steven Tantalos struck out five in seven three-hit innings of game two, and
Alex Roger threw the eighth to pick up the win decision.
Albright concludes its spring break with a record of 3-4, and will host Lebanon Valley on Friday in the Lions' belated home opener.
