Erin Farrell scored the winning goal as the Albright College women's lacrosse team knocked off Division II Colorado Mesa University on the Mavericks' home field, 12-11 on Wednesday.
The Lions had possession for over straight three minutes down the stretch. After setting up a good shot, Farrell finished off
Mariah Cullen's assist with 1:57 remaining for the winner.
Nicole Klusewitz won the ensuing draw and Colorado Mesa, who had not seen the ball since turning it over with 3:36 left in the game, was unable to regain possession until the final 22 seconds.
A tight game throughout featured seven ties and four lead changes. The contest was even at 9-9, 10-10 and 11-11 within the final 13 minutes.
Freshman
Lexi Garapola had five goals, while Farrell and Cullen scored twice each.
Amanda Smith added a goal, two assists, six ground balls, seven draw controls and five caused turnovers.
Klusewitz caused four turnovers, as the Lions forced 16 overall. They also won 16-of-25 draws, with Klusewitz and
Meghan Wilson controlling four each.
The Lions had trailed 9-7 but tied it up with goals from Cullen and Garapola. Twice CMU went ahead, only for Garapola to answer on both occasions. Her final tally evened things up at 11-11 with 6:54 remaining.
Albright had taken an early 4-1 lead. Farrell opened the scoring after three minutes, and Garapola struck twice in a row to give her side a three-goal advantage.
Colorado Mesa went on a 5-0 run and held Albright scoreless for over 15 and a half minutes, with Smith providing the Lions a much-needed goal before halftime.
Coming out of the break, Smith assisted Cullen right off the draw to tie the game at 6-6. Wilson scored with 27:35 remaining to make it 7-6 Albright.
The Lions out-shot CMU 30-23, including a 17-12 second half advantage. Mavericks goalie
Lauren Wells made 12 saves, with seven of them coming after halftime.
Albright is 4-3 on the season and will play another Division II opponent tomorrow when the Lions face Fort Lewis College on the campus of CMU.
