Box Score
The Albright College men's lacrosse team earned its first Commonwealth Conference victory of the season, holding off Elizabethtown 6-4 on the road Wednesday.
Leading a solid Lion defensive effort was sophomore
Matt Wighard, who was inserted into the starting lineup and totaled four caused turnovers and three ground balls.
Sean Cunningham and
T.J. Holston each forced two turnovers, while
Darian Meador picked up seven ground balls.
Senior goalie
Jordan DiZenzo was outstanding, making 10 saves and holding Etown scoreless into the second half.
DiZenzo also set up a big Albright goal at the end of the third quarter. He saved
Mike Specht in the final seconds of the period and quickly released
Jordan Zehr, who fed
Ryan Turner for a goal to put Albright up 5-1 heading into the fourth.
After the Blue Jays cut the gap to 5-3 with 7:47 remaining, freshman
Brandon Brown scored another crucial point for the Lions with 5:07 remaining.
Brown, Turner, Holston, Wighard,
Cam Cetrone and
Derek Stump each scored once for the Lions, with
Philip Potter adding a pair of assists.
Eight of the game's nine penalties were whistled against Albright, but the Blue Jays converted on just one of their eight man-up chances. The Lion defense held strong as Elizabethtown did not even record a shot on the first five power plays.
Albright improves to 4-3, 1-1, and will travel to rival Widener next Wednesday. Both the 2012 and 2013 regular season meetings between the teams went to overtime, with a conference playoff rematch following on both occasions.
