Albright Gives National Champs Scare in Shirk Stadium

Box Score

The Albright College men's lacrosse team was all over the defending national champions early, before Stevenson recovered for a 12-8 decision in Shirk Stadium on Saturday.

The Lions did not trail for the first 25-plus minutes, and led 3-0 after the first quarter despite having a goal called off in the opening period.

Junior T.J. Holston had four goals and an assist, with classmate Philip Potter dishing out four assists. Another third-year player, Ryan Turner, also had a hat trick against the #3 Mustangs.

Senior goalie Jordan DiZenzo had a huge game, stopping 17 shots to keep Albright close. Michael Donohoe and Darian Meador caused two turnovers each.

Albright was outstanding in a first quarter that ended with the underdog Lions ahead 3-0. In the third minute, A. Potter made a great move past a defender and found his brother Phil in front of goal. Unfortunately, the play was called off due to a foot in the crease.

The Lions kept creating chances, with defenseman Joe Devinney shooting just wide on the counterattack.

Holston finally opened the scoring on a man-up goal with 4:39 left in the quarter, off an assist from freshman Derek Stump. Turner and Cam Cetrone tacked on goals in the final 1:15 of the period.

Stevenson also had a goal called off early in the second quarter, and Holston later scored to make it 4-2 Albright.

Stevenson stormed back into a 6-5 halftime lead with three man-up goals in a stretch of 53 seconds, on three separate penalties. Billy Burgoyne tallied after a Holston slash, and Stephen Banick made the Lions pay both for a Matthew Lomady slash and a faceoff violation on Meador.

It was a game full of penalties- 24 in total. Each side scored shorthanded, with both teams also converting four man-up goals apiece.

Albright had a 6-on-3 late in the game, after Stevenson committed a trio of penalties on the same play (two infractions and then an illegal stick). P. Potter found Turner to cut the deficit to 10-6, and Turner scored again with a 6-on-5 to make it a three-goal game.

Albright earned another man-up chance two minutes later, but P. Potter hit the post. Stevenson was whistled for a fifth penalty in under four minutes, before long-pole Josh Rufolo put the contest out of reach with a huge rip on a shorthanded rush.

The Lions hit three pipes in the game. Lomady blasted a shot off the underside of the crossbar in the third quarter with Albright trailing by just two, and Cetrone also hit a post in the fourth quarter.

Banick finished with four goals, one assist and four ground balls for Stevenson. All-American faceoff man Brent Hiken gave the Mustangs a boost by winning 15-of-19 on the day. Glen Thomkins added two goals and one assist.

Albright falls to 1-2, 0-1 Commonwealth, but both losses have come to teams ranked in the top-three nationally. #3 Stevenson is 3-1, 1-0.
